Kidsercise + Goals

As a kid I used to run and jump and swing and swim…ALL THE TIME!  Especially during the summer.  WE actually a video of my brother and I dancing around our new living room in on of our quarters with my Uncle Bear (he gave the greatest bear hugs and was really furry) 🙂  We are just being completely silly and totally out of breathe from all the work we are putting into the activity.  I remember things like sliding down hills a million times for sledding and “ice skating” on our sidewalks in my patent leather Mary Janes after an ice storm when we had the day off of school.  It was all a blast and surprise, surprise all exercise.



That’s why I kind of get annoyed with these new Shrek commericals that encourage kids to get outside and play for an hour a day.  We were only allowed inside the house an hour a day from what I remember.  Okay Momma I kid we could come in a bit more often to warm up in the winter with hot cocoa and try to get the million layers off and in the summer to relax under the ceiling fan.  But we didn’t want to be inside watching TV because it was all soap operas…and as kids we loathed soap.



So lately Hunni and I have been taking over the idea of making exercise fun.  Kath talks about the gym being her indoor playground which is a great idea for formal exercise but what about the actual playground.  Hunni and I had my cousins visiting and we’ve had church kids to play games with so we’ve just had a blast things like the below…

I know it looks like I wasn’t playing with the kids…but I was the protector of the camera.  So I’d take a few pictures and then go run play and then come take a few more pictures.  I needed something to decorate my walls with which is an entire other post about how much work it is to decorate the house….let alone keep it clean.



It was much more fun to chase kids around then to run like a hamster on the elliptical…although I’ll have to continue to be a hamster for when they aren’t around.  But making fitness fun and just playing is great for children of all ages…even me.



Last Week’s Goals:



  • Figure out the knee. So PT was not fun.  Boot Camp Steve tried his best to loosen up my muscles but they were not having it.  Stairs, walking, even laying in bed smarts like heck.  I told Mish that I think my knee is trying to secede from my leg.  But my Primary Care Physician got me a really quick appointment with a Sports Medicine Specialist for Tuesday that will probably involve lots of poking and prodding and probably a trip to the big magnet (aka getting and MRI).  So no answers except it’s messed up.
  • Finish planning the summer. Plans are better but not completely set.  But we have our vacation destinations set and now just need to save and prep.  But I’m happy to know when I’ll be able to relax.
  • Menu planning. This didn’t go so well for this week but I really didn’t intend it too.  There was the entire thing of needing to buy groceries, lots of meetings and Vacation Bible School all weekend.  So you might be asking why this is green…I planned menus for next week and they are set.  Yeah!
  • Get some new books. Somehow I actually made it to the library this week.  It was a quick trip after a meeting on monday but before another.  I picked up The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie for listening while traveling that I’m already loving…and Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner who I have loved since Good in Bed. I’m having fun enjoying both.
  • Quilting. So plans are in place to go down south and visit some awesome friends.  That means that I need to get these three quilts one before the first week of October.  But my good plans to quilt on Sunday evening (the only time I really had to do any of it) were thwarted by one of the most stressful days full of things that can’t be shared on the blog but I took a long nap and ordered out food again..  And barely ate it.  This was not good.  But quilting countdown will commence now since I have a deadline 🙂



This Week’s Goals:



  • Quilting. I know I’ve said this before and again.  But looking at my lovely Google Calendar I see I actually have time this week to do so.  Amazing that there is actually a spare moment in my schedule for fun.  First step work on Monica’s quilt because it has all the pieces cut.  And convince Teish she needs to give me an idea of colors she wants because unlike most people today she wants the gender to be a surprise.  It will be wonderful fun to find out the gender after the little one is born but makes a quilter’s job a bit harder.  No pink or blue.
  • Knee Doctor. I was blessed to get a quick appointment with the knee doctor for tomorrow at 9.30 am so any prayers, thought or good vibes you could send me would be nice. I would appreciate not feeling like my knee no longer wants to be a part of my leg.  And I’m afraid of all the diagnostic tests that they are going to do to determine the actual pain. YES THAT HURTS!
  • Swimming. I have a few more day left on my guest pass at the Y and then I’m joining.  It’s not my ideal gym but it is what we have here.  I am still going to keep the other membership due to convenience of hour and wicked cheap price.  But I love all the classes, the pool and steam room and sauna available at the Y so I’ll be a two membership girl.  Thank God for good health insurance that pays for it.
  • Eat my menus. Vacation and crazy weeks get me into this crazy cycle of it is just easier to eat out.  But I have some great quick recipes that do not require the oven (which turns the house into a furnace) and can be stored if cooked ahead.  So I will be eating my own food instead of food at the few places we alway order from…don’t worry we’ll be back in the busy times again.
  • Planning. Now that we have vacation ideas I need to plan them.  So email will go out and phone calls will be made to make more concrete details about trips…especially since on involves going through several states down south.  I want to be as prepared as possible.

    Looks like you guys had a great time! Kids are definitely a great form of exercise!

    Kids do keep you busy that’s for sure! We are just hanging out and trying to stay cool!

    I wanna go swing now! 🙂

    When I was a kid I spent ALL my time outside, barefoot too. It’s crazy how much time kids spend indoors now.
