The Naughty List + Goals

After my horrible experience with being served food I really couldn’t eat at my last conference I’m not making that mistake again.  I’m all for packing stuff just in case it happens again but I’ve also come up with a list that I sent to the organizer of this next one so she knows what I can and can’t eat for the meals provided.  I get sick if I eat improper foods and they promise to accomodate my needs so here is my naughty list of foods.

  • Meat of any kind
  • Sugar
  • Sugar Alcohols (malitol, sorbitol, ect)- Things like equal, nutrasweet, splenda
  • Dairy (only in very limited quantities)- milk, cheese, etc.
  • Grapefruit- This isn’t IBS related…I’m full of issues remember.

So basically I’m a vegetarian/semi-vegan who can’t have sugar or sugar replacements.  It’s not that hard to feed me really.  I eat food, real food, all the time.  Feed me I’m hungry.

Some people have looked at this list and find it depressing, limiting, you name the adjective.  And it very well could be if I only focused on that list of what I couldn’t eat.  I could focus on the fact that it means I can’t have the desserts they always have at these meetings.  I could focus on the fact that I’ll have to get my own coffee at Starbucks prior to arriving since they don’t have soy or almond milk.  I could focus on the fact that I may be fed a salad that I’ll have to beef up with my own side of nuts or other protein.  But I don’t want to focus on that.

It’s kind of like being a kid at Christmas and worrying if you are on Santa’s naughty list.  Instead I focus on all the wonderful good foods I can eat.  Trust me there are more foods I can eat instead of can’t.  Really I’ve found so many new things to eat on this journey.  And when I focus on the yes things instead of no things I enjoy life more.  My body enjoys life when I eat this way and I in turn enjoy it much more.  So even though I have a naughty list I have a nicer list of foods to focus on.  Hopefully others can see this too.

Last Week’s Goals:

  • Work on quilting backlog. Okay I didn’t work on them as much this week as I’d hoped because it was nutzo central in the It All Changes household this week.  But I did spend some time working on it on Saturday night and Sunday after I got back from a day full of meetings.  Did I get as much done as I’d hoped no…but I get in the zone and can just work and work.  The last block for the quilt for my mentee (the nickname my young friend gave herself since I was her mentor) is done and I can start putting it together to hopefully hand to her before she leaves on a jet plane to Puerto Rico.  And I’ve started to work on the others.  I will get them done…even if it takes all summer with me under heavy hot quilts.  I’ll just have a huge electric bill since I’ll have to jack up the A/C.
  • Get ahead on some work. I picked a sermon series and looked ahead at sunday school lessons.  But did I actually write anything up…that’s a big fat NOPE.  Reference the above nutzo central.  Add to that craziness with one of my employees getting sick and my main volunteer having to schedule an appointment during the program he normally runs.  Let’s just say I burned a lot of calories running around like a chicken with my head cut off instead of sitting at my desk doing work and hanging out on twitter.  But a little is better than nothing right.
  • Ride on the trail twice. Big fat no!  I forgot about the holiday on monday that we spend having fun.  And then Boot Camp Steve kicked my butt so much on Wednesday that I could barely walk.  And once again reference the nutzo central so the riding didn’t happen.  But I did get in other workouts this week to make up for it.
  • Get ready for weddings. Gifts for one wedding are purchased and just need to be wrapped.  The other gifts are in the process of purchasing.  And the cards were a crazy time at Target with Hunni who likes all the crazy weird cards and wanted to buy something random instead of heart felt.  He won out on one card because the groom is one of his good friends.  But we are set for going and just need to wrap up the details and pack.
  • Plan our Anniversary. We are closing the office and heading out to explore Vermont for the day.  Maple Syrup, random art and cute little stands.  Good day for us.  And we might even hit the trail.  No official plans which is driving me a bit nuts but we are winging it to just have fun 🙂

This Week’s Goals:

  • Pack, Pack, Pack. Pack the gifts, pack the clothes, pack the dogs, pack the uniform (I forgot that on the last trip), pack anything and everything I could possibly need for our week long vacation.  Okay maybe not but we are taking a 12 passenger van for the trip so we have plenty of room 🙂  I’m headed out for vacation after Sunday church so I need to be packed before then.
  • Eat up perishables. We will be gone for a week so I don’t want to ocme back to a petri dish of mold in my fridge.  So we will be eating up the stuff we have in the fridge.  We have a two day meeting this week so this will be a challenge.  I might be yelling at Hunni to chug his milk like a frat boy at a party 🙂
  • Pre-plan travel meals. One of the biggest things I’ve learned from Caitlin (among the many things) is to plan your meals for travel.  It is hard to find good vegetarian options while traveling.  Luckily I know where we can stop for dinner on the way to Momma’s on Sunday but the rest is all up in the air.  So I’m bringing along some things and the wonderful Momma has bought me some lovely veggie options for all the traveling we’ll be doing during our vacation.
  • Plan for workouts. We will be traveling a lot during this week of vacation…we may actually need a vacation to recover from our vacation.  But that doesn’t mean I can’t get in some workouts.  We are going to walk around Philly one day, DC another, and go kayaking a third.  We’ll get some physical activity in which means in my packing I need workout clothes, shoes and sun screen.  But I’m excited to get in some other workouts than my normal stuff.
  • Get in my normal eating, exercising, schedule. Even with all the lead up to vacation I still have a bunch to do in my regular life.  So I need to balance it out.  I need to eat healthy, go to PT and they gym, get my office work done.  I’m a list maker so a listing I will go to make sure all the regular stuff along with special stuff gets done.  I can get it done…I’m the little engine that could…I think I can…I think I can.

I’ve got a lot on my plate this week but I don’t want to add stress food to my plate.  But I can get it done because I do…and if I don’t get it all done the world will not fall apart…I think.

love the goals but adore your last sentence
    I call it dr phil’ing myself 🙂
work toward all youve listed but also ask yourself IF I DONT NAIL EVERYTHING—WHATS THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN?

for me the majority of the time its nothing too too major and the fact I ask myself lessens my stressload and I end up getting MORE DONE.

That’s how I’m feeling. There are only a few basic things that HAVE to get done. Everything is pressure I put on myself so I lessen the pressure by saying what is the worst that can happen.

I admire you for calling ahead and telling them what you need. That’s so great. And like MizFit said – I love that you have a great attitude about getting it all done. No one is perfect and I know I don’t hit my list of things to do about 90% of the time!

Thanks Diane. After the last experience of not having anything I could eat it was necessary. And I’m packing snacks just in case.

I’m getting better about relaxing with my To-do list. I used to stress if I didn’t get it all done. Now i just move it to the next day so that it will eventually get done.
