Labor Day Fun & The Nemesis


Yesterday started with me in my comfy college sweater and PJ pants and it ended the same way.  Snuggled on the couch in my fancy snuggie (Red Velour from Bed Bath and Beyond 🙂 ).  In between the comfy-ness I did some work but not as much as I wanted due to these guys,

Sat at my dining room table to while watching Dirty Jobs (Mike Rowe is freaking hilarious!) and working on a quilt for a beautiful baby girl, rachel's quilt 002 completed the entire top of said quilt

and went to the gym for some light cardio since my hip was still objecting during a wonderful rerun of Caitlynn’s episode of 16 And Pregnant.  It makes me cry every time.  Kind of weird while speed walking on the treadmill at the gym.

Then I ended up back on the couch watching more Dirty Jobs and my main man Dr. Gregory House so that I’ll be ready for the season premiere.  Then I smelled it…that stetch that could only come from a skunk.  It was wafting through our windows so bad that Peanut actually sniffed the air, looked at me and sneezed with disgust.  Hey, I didn’t do it dog!  We closed all the windows and hoped the skunk would go away soon.  Then came the time for the dog to have their evening walk.  They almost got sprayed trying to play with the skunk that they thought was a cat.  Thank God Hunni ran the other direction and went the long way to the side door.  That skunk is our dog’s nemesis anytime they go for a walk at night.  It hisses at them all the time.

So I got to thinking what are my nemesises… or is that nemisi…or nemesis like moose.  Anyway I have a few things that really are like monkey’s on my back that won’t go away.  When I started loosing weight I switched from Regular to Diet soda to avoid the calories.  And now there is some magic in that bottle that makes me want it.  I can go for a whole month without it (Lent) and then the second I drink one the cravings come back like an addict. 

Same with sugar.  I had so much of it as a kid.  Snacks would be bread with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top…you got that right straight sugar with a bit o’ cinnamon.  So I have a sweet tooth to rival a candy maker.  And one little piece is not enough.  I have to avoid it or I go hog wild.  Heather over at HEAB had a great post yesterday about sugar and American’s crazy need to have a “right” to it.  You should check it out.  Her wit is awesome and she is so right. 

And laziness can be my nemesis too.  I don’t know if it’s complete laziness.  I work my butt off for work so some days I’m just dead.  And others I don’t think I have “enough” time to workout.  I think it’s my habits more than anything.  If I can’t do it my way I don’t do it.  It is a pain because I could be doing so much more.

I need to stay away from the diet soda and sugar but I’m going to take them one at a time.  I started with sugar.  It took every fiber of my being to not buy the chocolate on sale or the ice cream.  I’m trying so hard and stuck to a peach instead.  So not the same but my body will thank me later.  I’ll try the diet coke after I get back from my Colorado trip next week.  I think it would be too much to do that while traveling.  And I’ve made the decision to kick my butt to go to the gym.  Even though I knew I wouldn’t burn nearly as many calories as I’m used to at the gym I still went yesterday.  200 calories is so disappointing when you are used to 600 but I did it!  And I went to the trainer today even though my hip is still sore and modified the exercises.  I felt great afterward even though I didn’t want to go.  Have to remember that feeling and not the laziness prior.  I can do this one step and one change at a time

    You can so do this my friend. You can!

    You are not completely lazy at all. So you’re not burning 600 calories – at least you’re moving, and your hip needs to heal. Your body will thank you in the long run.

    Diet soda – they totally put something super addictive in that stuff. When I stopped drinking it, I had major withdrawal symptoms – worse than when I stopped drinking coffee. So, I totally understand.

      Thanks for the reminder of the hip needing to heal. I need to tell my mind that. I felt great after the run but my brain kept saying “more!”

      I think I’m going to try and have half-caff coffee when I stop the soda. It will help with the jolt but not the chemicals.

      I’m glad my words helped. I’m totally going to soak up some moutain air and hit some of those beautiful spots in Garden of the Gods you posted about 🙂

      Yes they are adorable and they know it too. Hence the reason I couldn’t move them from their perch even though they made it hard to do work 🙂

    I agree with Heather – movement is movement and is not about the calories. and diet soda is totally addictive. I’m the same way – i can go months without it, but once I have it…that’s all I want.

      Thank Brandi. Its such a mindset for me because I know the calories have to be burned to lose weight so I think I need to burn a ton. But I am enjoying walking a bit more since I can’t run…even if it is frustrating.
